Y&R’s Jill Farren Phelps on Ian Ward and Fake Cassie

Miss Jill Farren Phelps was interviewed by the absolute best in the business, Mr Michael Logan of TV Guide Magazine. The subject Fake Cassie(Camryn Grimes) and her association with Ian Ward(Ray Wise). It seems little miss “I’m sorry for what I did” is really a grade A _ithch! Fill in the blank.
“Fassie” is also Mariah, Tyler’s(Redaric Williams) ex girlfriend. WOW?

When TV Guide Magazine spoke with the executive producer, Jill Farren Phelps she was asked to reveal where Mariah and Ian will go from here?

TV Guide Magazine: Let’s start with the nefarious Ian. Was it always the plan to connect him with Fake Cassie/Mariah?

Phelps: Not at all. Ray Wise was only supposed to be with us for a short story arc — 10 days — but we quickly realized what a gold mine he is. In order to keep him, it became necessary to connect Ian with someone else on the show, beyond Nikki and Dylan. Ray has been a wonderful fresh face in Genoa City. The second he hit the screen it was, “Jackpot!” We knew this immediately, of course, but his episodes hadn’t aired yet. By the time we knew the audience was crazy about Ray, too, we’d already completed our original agreement with him.

TV Guide Magazine: Is that why the writers put his character in jail?

Phelps: Yes. That was supposed to be Ian’s swan song, but then we got word that Ray really wanted to stay. He’s very happy here with us. So then we had to get him out of jail. TV Guide Magazine: What’s with the inference that Mariah strayed from “The Path”? Was she one of Ian’s disciples?

Phelps: Possibly. Possibly a very important one.

TV Guide Magazine: Is she his child?

Phelps: Well…perhaps in some form. [Laughs] Is that vague enough for ya?
TV Guide Magazine: I’ll take it! So what’s Ian really want in Genoa City? Does he still have a thing for Nikki? Will he continue to screw with the Newmans even though everyone is on to him?
Phelps: That’s his goal, though it’s more than just screwing with them for the hell of it. He intends to infiltrate that whole rich-family connection. He likes the sudden power he has being Dylan’s father and the instant relationship it gives him with the Newmans. He’s an opportunist and he sees opportunity. Of course, if Nikki would take him, he’d be happy to be back in her life.

TV Guide Magazine: He’s got balls going up against Victor like this!

Phelps: Oh, Victor will have his day in court with Ian.
TV Guide Magazine: Let’s talk about your other big reveal. At what point did you decide Fake Cassie would also turn out to be Mariah?

Phelps: Very early on. As soon as Tyler even mentioned there was a Mariah, the writers knew it would be Fake Cassie. She is going to be a huge threat to the Abby-Tyler relationship, which we know really needed some help. Mariah will also continue to have enormous involvement in the Sharon-Nick story and, obviously, her relationship with Ian is going to be big when it’s finally discovered by other people. She’s a wild girl, not a good girl like Cassie, and that will impact the whole Newman family.
TV Guide Magazine: What’s Mariah’s problem exactly?

Phelps: She’s a have-not. That’s a very powerful, driving force for her. Whereas Cassie had everything, Mariah had nothing, and the more she sees of the Newmans’ life, the more she resents getting so little. Sure, we’ve seen that Mariah has a heart — she knows how much her Cassie face means to Sharon and is touched by that — but that’s not the real her. There are no limits to what this woman will do to get what she doesn’t have. Mariah is one very loose cannon.

It looks like “MarIan” will be around for quite awhile, raising hell in Genoa City and we have to wonder how many residents they will harm in their quest.

Abby, Dylan,, Nikki, Paul, Nick, Sharon, Summer, Noah, Tyler, Avery, Victor? How else is Ian Ward connected to GC? Could he be the one pulling Colin’s strings? This would then affect Cane and Lily. What are the secrets that he is keeping that will affect Dylan and Nikki?

We will just have to sit back and enjoy the #1 soaps twists and turns and just enjoy a very eventful spring and summer.

Does Ron Carlivatti despise the Sonny Corinthos character?

I am mystified by Ron Carlivati. He has become a writer I do not recognize anymore. His writing for One Life To Live was stellar and his love of the families of Llanview was always evident. Even the most vile character was given heart and understanding of those faults.

Now he writes for General Hospital with utter contempt and the most reviled character is that of Sonny Corinthos. The way he destroyed A J Quartermaine was totally out of character for the RC I watched for years. This is the family he should be reverently writing for. Instead he has made fools of most and destroyed the Quartermaines for good.

Now, as I watch his writing for the mob boss I realize he despises the character. Sonny Corinthos was always an irredeemable character for me. Totally immoral and self centered and disloyal when he felt it was right. Sonny plays by his own rules and even his children are fair game when he is in that mood. Yes SC lives his life not by his morals or ethics which he lacks, but by his moods.

He makes promises he fails to keep most times because his mood changes and then watch out. He will make promises to his sons and then break them time after time. Who can forget when he turned against Carly and threw her and her son out. His “son” Michael was turned away without a backward glance. Oh, but he had bipolar disorder then and did not know it. Can you just think back to the number of excuses that have been made for Sonny over the years, even by the women he has used and abused. Well he is being treated now and what has he done? Promised Michael he would never kills his father A J, and then turns around and shoots him point bank in the chest, just like he did to his other son Dante. Sonny was forgiven then, but will he be forgiven this time? Now that Ron Carlivati is in charge? Will Morgan forgive him again? Now that he literally screwed him and his lover Ava? Will he be as forgiving as he was when Sonny stabbed him in the back? The child that was truly his, but he could never love like he “loves” the stolen one, Michael.

Sonny has always been written bad. He was bad from day one when he got Karen on drugs and had her stripping. There are only so many ways you can make him redeemable and RC cannot do this. He has been writing Sonny with dislike since he started and only those who are enamored of the dimples and the bad boy image do not see this.

The rest of us see the contempt and dislike in each scene and now with the rutting that went on in the mausoleum right after A J was put to rest he made his intentions clear. Sonny Corinthos will be the pig many of us have despised and pulling him out of this immoral act and making excuses is going to be hard for anyone to write. Ron Carlivatti won’t be the one that is for sure.

General Hospital can be seen weekdays on ABC at 2 p.m.

With the news of the soaps all losing viewers ringing in the air and gloom and doom being the news on the soap front and many viewers add their feelings to the news I wonder why this time of year people are so negative about the soaps?

We all know soaps will be coming up with new and some exciting storylines with May sweeps approaching and this a natural phenomenon. With the season changing viewers may take a break to enjoy the “Spring” in the air.

Soaps rise and fall in the ratings, but the true viewers come back in force again as the action picks up and the steadfast viewers, like those of Y&R and GH, do not forsake their shows for some new gimmick the stations may come up with.

Action and stimulation are better seen on the night time shows where more money is thrown at the shows and guest stars are paid to brighten the landscape. Constant gratification is ordered and served up nightly. We need to remember we go through many highs and lows with the night time shows. Repeats throughout the season are frustrating and the season gets shorter every year, where soaps are a constant and we can rely on them everyday, all year long. How would prime time shows do if they had to perform for us the same way soaps do?

No genre gives you the promise of being there for you day after day year after year. No Prime Time show can deliver the goods 240 days a year. It is natural that there will be lulls in the ratings for “Daytime Drama’s”, but viewers know they will be there for them when they come back.

Shows lose viewers and gain them back, but here are the ratings to look at each week (from SON).

Madelaine and Leisl are sisters on GH. Where are the Quartermaines?

Madelaine and Leisl are sisters? Nathan and Britt are cousins, half brother and sister, lovers? What the heck is going on at General Hospital? Why must they keep bringing in new characters when the main characters are being decimated. Who needs new nurses when the core families are available?

GH is generally a violent show full of murder and mayhem, but when the OLTL fab two came on to write and produce there was a glimmer of hope that they would be able to bring the legendary characters back to their former glory. Instead they became Capone and Derringer and started killing off the people who made GH great. Quartermaines are now extinct. Dinosaurs in the new world. They can never be revived, there is no one left to bring new life to their clan. Even if they bring Jason back, he does not carry their name so the Q’s are no more. Yes, we have Tracy who does have some screen time, but Monica is mere filler.

Some fans suggest that Monica can be the third sister in the Magda, Leisl mess, hoping she will be brought front and center, but that still has nothing to do with the Q’s. Sure it would be nice to have Monica on screen for more than 30 seconds, but the Q’s have been eliminated either way. I know Ned will be back for the funeral, but any chance of a rebirth of the Q’s is as dead as they are.

Why is it easier to write for newbies than to carry on with the families who count? Yes Nathan is good to look at and Britt has become bearable, but Levi? Why couldn’t they write for AJ, and Ned and Brook Lynn. Why does Michael have to be a Corinthos when he was becoming a Quartermaine with AJ.

Why was every young Quartermaine killed violently when the Corinthos brood should have been targeted? They with the mob boss for a dad?

When did Carlivatti become a death monger instead of the writer who held family to the highest importance on the much missed One Life To Live. The Lords and Cramers and Buchanans thrived on OLTL. He used to be one of the best writers in the business, but has been relegated to being a hit man once he came to GH.

With Robert (for lack of a s/l)and Robin(should never have been brought back) gone the Scorpio family is eradicated, since Mac is also filler and The Spencer family is a joke now that Luke has been replaced with mob minded Lukebot and Bobby gone and Lucas just mooning over Brad, unfortunately, the founding Hardy family is long gone. All replaced by criminals, Corinthos, Cassidines, Jeromes , and their minions. tom Hardy should be running General Hospital not Frau Leisel.

It is a sorry day for Port Charles when they have no upright families to look up to. Just the legacy of violence and death. PC has become a graveyard. A graveyard of Quartermaines!

General Hospital can be seen weekdays on ABC at 2 p.m.

Peter Reckell would return to Days of Our Lives to tie up Bo’s storyline

Nanci Hughes
NY Soap Opera Examiner

April 10, 2014
What could be better than Bo coming home to Salem and Hope and Ciarra? Bo Brady, played by the much missed Peter Reckell has been missing for almost eighteen months, presumably on a top secret assignment.

In truth DOOL decided yo back burner Bo and Hope, the heart and soul of Days and after too much new generation Salemites Peter decided: “I took my place in the hierarchy of the show, in the storyline, moving others aside, in the [1980s]. Now others have moved into the place I once held,” Reckell said at the time. “I have been very fortunate to have had such a long, meaningful, run. But now, with a torn heart, I have to say goodbye to the people, family, the character, that I love.”

Now after much pleading from the fans for Bo to return je took to Twitter to respond.

“Going back to DAYS, I don’t think that will ever happen as a long term commitment,” Reckell wrote to fans. “Going back to close out Bo’s story in a respectful way??? I would do that for you. You deserve better then what they have done to Bo. You have been very faithful and dedicated for years, decades!”

Peter has not been keeping up with DAYS since he left and so has no idea how they would write him out..

“Not sure what kind of story line could happen, I haven’t watched the show. You would have better ideas,” Reckel added. “Time to contact the show.”

Would it hurt too much to see Peter Reckell back for a short time or would you just be happy to see him for whatever time he was given?

Soap Opera’s blamed for Daytime Emmys declining audience

According to Variety.com the reason for the low ratings for the Daytime Emmys is that it centers around soap opera’s. Because so little focus is given to talk shows and game shows and children;s programming.

“According to Gabriel Gornell, who exec produced the past two telecasts, audience apathy may be due to the ceremony’s strong focus on one genre: soap operas. “There’s a long history in building this special around daytime dramas,” says Gornell.”

“Daytime Emmys switched networks almost annually for four decades and has been beset by a 20-year ratings slide. Case in point: In 1993, the broadcast garnered 22 million viewers. Last year, viewers of the HLN telecast numbered 913,000.

They certainly do not see the real picture. If they go back to the older telecasts tey will see that the Daytime Emmys were so popular because they were about daytime dramas , the soap opera’s.

The beautiful women and gorgeous hunky men of soaps hosted the show, gave out the awards and entertained as well. Soap viewers were there in full force and the ratings were high.

The new telecasts have people outside of soap’s with TV newscasters handing them out and singing(?). So of course they have lost viewers the shows have become boring because of all of the lack of soap actors. Though we only had five soaps last year and now only four, the fans of the four soaps have moved mountains to keep their soaps and will show up for the show if and only if it is centered around the daytime dramas with soap actors honoring the talk shows and the game shows and the few children shows.

Make it a soap extravaganza people and you will see the fans come roaring back instead of losing interest and watching Prime Time soaps like Dallas, Devious Maids or Revenge instead.

Alicia Leigh Willis(GH, AW) will come to Salem where some say she will interact with Liam(Mark Collier), but since other newbie’s are on the scene she could know Aiden(Daniel Cosgrove) also. We are still awaiting the arrival of the fabulous Kassie DePaiva too, so only time will tell.
